An AI-era paper reading workflow from search to research question
Turn a paper into a reusable record of its question, method, evidence, and limitations with AI-assisted reading.
The hard part of reading a paper is rarely understanding every sentence. It is being able to answer three questions afterwards: what problem did the authors solve, which conditions support the conclusion, and what does the paper change about your own work?
AI can accelerate search and organization, but it should not replace a researcher’s judgment about evidence. A reliable workflow puts AI in the role of organizing and asking questions while the paper, data, and methods remain the evidence layer.
Start with four fields
For every paper, keep four fixed fields:
- Research question: describe the object, task, and comparison in one sentence.
- Method: record data, variables, models, controls, and evaluation metrics.
- Evidence: mark the tables, figures, experiments, and statistics supporting the claim.
- Limitations: capture stated limitations and risks you identify in generalizing the result.
These fields are more useful for a later review than a long paragraph of notes. They also give an AI assistant a structured input, but every number and claim should still be checked against the paper.
Three low-risk uses for AI
First, ask AI to turn a paper’s table of contents into a question list, then choose which questions matter. Second, turn passages you have already verified into a table to reduce repetitive copying. Third, compare terminology, data, and metrics across papers to see whether they actually address the same problem.
Avoid asking an AI system to simply “summarize this paper and give me the conclusion.” Missing context, omitted tables, or a changed paper version can produce a fluent summary that cannot be traced back to evidence.
Move from a paper to a research question
After the reading record, write three sentences: what the paper solves, what it does not solve, and what you can test. The third sentence should be executable, such as changing a dataset, replacing a baseline, or checking a boundary condition. “Explore this further” is not yet a research question.
This record works for proposals, literature reviews, lab meetings, and project retrospectives. Its value is not making reading look faster. It keeps evidence, interpretation, and the next action separate.
